East Kilbride Rotary Club

Our Speaker on the 14th of October 2011 was John MacNamara who has been personal fitness trainer for the last 15 years. He has helped numerous sport personalities to achieve their maximum potential.   John, played Rugby and is also a triathlon competitor involving 2½ mile swim followed by 112 mile cycle race and finally 26 mile run. John demonstrated several techniques and explained the importance of nutrition that can be used to help maintain fitness and health irrespective of age. This subject had obviously struck a chord with the membership as there followed a lively and informative question and answer session... The vote of thanks was given by Archie King
Quite an unique occasion within the Rotary Club during the week ending the 14th of October in that the club held two meetings one on Monday the 10th of Oct in the evening when our principle speaker was  Fiona Mawuena (formally Fiona Marra a local East Kilbride Lass) who came along to the club to keep the Rotarians up to date with the progress that is being made at Kpandai in Ghana where the Rotarians have helped to build a school for girls. Progress has been extremely good and the transformation that has taken place over six years has been amazing the school is becoming more and more self sufficient and they now are providing education for 135 girls. The school is becoming well known in the district as an educational success were results are well to the fore. The school are having to turn potential pupils away because of lack of sponsors so please if there are any readers out there who could sponsor a girl at the school please get in touch with Lets us Shine  http://www.justgiving.com/letusshine

At our lunch meeting on the 28th of October members
had the pleasure of a return visit from Dr Vincent a
member of the Rotary Club of Nagercoil Mid Town R.C.
Dr Vincent on this visit spoke to the members of the
success story of the eradication of Polio in the Indian
sub continent, all through the Rotary International Polio
Plus Campaign emphasising how in his district there
now only had been one reported case of Polio this year.
High lighting how via Rotary International and the Bill &
Melinda Gates Foundation we were within 1% of total
Eradication of Polio. He has spoken to over 30 clubs on
the subject of Polio and has been most surprised how
little the general public are of the contribution that is
being made by Rotarians worldwide. Where as in India
the general public did know of Rotarians commitment.
He took time to thank East Kilbride Rotary Club members
for their long term contribution of 27 years to defeat this
horrible disease. On this occasion the vote of thanks was in the hands of Past President Edwin Robertson highlighting how our speaker choice was appropriate especially when the 24th of Oct was Rotary International's World Polio Day.
